Sewer Backup

Sewer Backup Cleanup: what it covers

Quick answer

Sewer backup cleanup treats water that came up a drain as contaminated: the crew works under containment in protective equipment, removes porous materials rather than drying them, cleans hard surfaces and then dries the structure. In Worcester this is usually cellar work around a floor drain. Calls are answered 24/7.

A backup is not a worse version of a clean leak.

That is why the first instruction is to stay out. Do not use sinks, toilets or the washing machine while water is standing, because every fixture you run sends more down the same blocked line and back up through the lowest opening in the house.

The second step is finding out where the blockage actually is. Ask the Department of Public Works which pipe is involved, because the answer shapes the repair and the paperwork, and guessing at it in the first hour helps nobody.

Warning signs

Signs you need sewer backup cleanup

Keep out of water that came up a drain, and keep children and pets out of the room completely. Do not use any sink, shower, toilet or washing machine in the building until the line has been cleared, because every one of them adds to what comes back up. Do not try to clean contaminated water with household equipment; the CDC advice for handling wet, moldy material is gloves, a mask and goggles, and a backup calls for more than that. Treat the area as electrically live if water is near outlets, the panel or the boiler, and call (833) 490-5225 rather than going in to see how bad it is.

  • Water rising from a cellar floor drain, or a drain that gurgles when a toilet is flushed upstairs
  • A toilet or tub on the lowest floor backing up while the ones above drain normally
  • A sewage smell in the cellar that strengthens when any fixture in the house is used
  • Dark staining or soft debris around the drain cover after the water has gone
  • Every fixture in the building draining slowly at once rather than one of them
  • Water appearing at the base of the cellar stairs during heavy rain with no pipe leaking
  • A washing machine discharge that backs up into the cellar instead of going away
Our process

How our sewer backup cleanup visit works

  1. Stop adding water and secure the area

Nobody uses water in the building until the line is clear.

  2. Establish containment and protection

The work area is sheeted off from the rest of the house, air is managed so it is not pushed into clean rooms, and the crew works in protective equipment.

  3. Remove the water and the porous materials

Waste water is extracted with dedicated equipment. Carpet and pad, cardboard, wet insulation, soaked particleboard, upholstered items and any food packaging the water reached are documented, bagged and taken out rather than cleaned in place.

  4. Clean, then treat the surfaces that stay

The slab, masonry, framing, mechanical equipment feet and hard goods are cleaned and then treated.

  5. Dry the structure and verify it

Only once the contamination is out does drying begin, with air movers and dehumidifiers in a closed cellar and readings taken against a dry reference elsewhere in the building. The log of removals, cleaning and readings is the record for an insurer.

Water comes up a cellar floor drain during heavy rain

What homeowners notice
During a long, intense rain, dirty water rises through the floor drain of a city cellar and spreads across the concrete and into a carpeted corner used as a play space. The household notices a smell before it notices the water, and a sink upstairs is draining slowly.
What we do
Everyone stays out of the cellar while the water is treated as contaminated. The homeowner is told to stop using water in the house and to ask the DPW which pipe the blockage is in, so the right party clears it. In protective gear the crew extracts, removes the carpet, pad and any porous material that cannot be cleaned, then cleans and disinfects the concrete and the lower framing and dries the space behind containment.
What to expect
The cellar is cleaned, dried to readings and documented, and the owner is pointed at the insurer to ask whether the policy carries a backup endorsement, since sewer backup is generally excluded unless one has been added.

6-7 hours typical visit

What should I do first if sewage has backed up?

Stop using water anywhere in the building, keep everyone out of the room, and do not try to clean it yourself. Then find out which pipe the blockage is in by asking the Department of Public Works, and call so a crew can be sent as soon as one is free.

Photograph what you can from a safe distance before anything is touched, including how high the water reached and what it reached. That record matters for an insurance claim and it takes thirty seconds. If the water is anywhere near outlets, the panel, the boiler or a plugged-in freezer, treat it as live and wait.

Why can a Worcester sewer back up during heavy rain?

The city sewer system is combined, which means stormwater and wastewater share the same pipes on their way to the Upper Blackstone treatment plant. In intense storms the flow can run beyond the system capacity, and the designed relief is an overflow to the Blackstone River rather than anything inside a house.

A city spokesperson has said those river overflows can happen five to 25 times a year, and the city is updating its Long-Term Control Plan with a stated goal of no more than four a year under an EPA requirement, with a public workshop scheduled for 30 October 2025. In July 2022 city officials said about 879,000 gallons overflowed into the river. The city also offers email alerts within two hours of an overflow. Those figures describe discharge to the river and are not a measure of household backups, which have their own causes in the building and in the line serving it.

Why is so much thrown away after a backup?

Because cleaning cannot be verified inside a porous material. Carpet pad, cardboard, insulation, particleboard and upholstery absorb contaminated water throughout, and the EPA treats porous items wet longer than 48 hours as generally better removed even for clean water.

Hard, non-porous things generally stay: metal shelving, plastic bins, tools, the slab, masonry and sound framing are cleaned and treated rather than discarded. The losses are the soft and the layered, and in a cellar that tends to mean stored boxes, furniture that was sitting on the floor, and anything built against the wall below the water line. Everything taken out is listed and photographed before it goes, so you have a record for a claim and nothing disappears without an account of it.

What moves the price of a backup cleanup?

How far the water spread, how long it sat, how much porous material it reached, whether the room is finished, how many units are involved and how much containment the building needs. The price is explained and approved before work starts, and reconstruction is quoted separately.

A shallow backup around a cellar drain in an unfinished space is at the small end. The same event in a finished basement becomes removal of flooring, baseboard, insulation and part of the studwork, plus the rebuild behind it. Access does the rest: a narrow three-decker stair, a bulkhead-only cellar or a tenanted building where three households need notice all add hours.

Does insurance cover a sewer backup?

Generally not without an endorsement. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance notes that sewer backup and sump-pump failure are generally excluded from standard homeowner, renter and condominium policies and may be covered by endorsement, and that flood is excluded. Under the federal flood programme, backup is covered only where a flood is the proximate cause.

So the first thing to check is your own declarations page for a water or sewer backup endorsement, and the second is what caused this event. Keep the photographs, the removal list and the cleaning and drying log; ask for any denial in writing; and check whether the policy has an appraisal provision. The Division of Insurance Consumer Service Unit at mass.gov takes complaints about how a claim was handled, expects you to take it up with the insurer first, and cannot decide the facts of a loss such as what caused it.

Options

Types and options for sewer backup cleanup

Backup confined to a cellar floor drain

The most common version here, and the most containable. The water stays below grade, usually around the drain and the low part of the slab, and the losses are whatever was stored on the floor.

Backup into a finished basement or ground-floor room

Carpet, pad, a floating floor, baseboard, insulation and the lower part of any studwork all come out, because contamination cannot be verified inside a porous material. Cut lines are agreed with you first and photographed.

Backup reaching more than one unit

In a three-decker the lowest fixture takes the backup, so a blockage shared by three households shows up in one apartment or in the cellar. Access has to be agreed with every household before anybody uses water again, and tenants need telling in writing.

Worcester County

Why sewer backup cleanup is different in Central Massachusetts

The combined system is the piece of local infrastructure worth understanding here, because it means a heavy storm loads the same pipes that carry household waste. The relief designed into that arrangement goes to the Blackstone River, which begins near the city centre, and not into buildings; a household backup is a separate event with a cause in the building or the line serving it.

Housing age shapes the cleanup. Much of the city is pre-war three-deckers and mill-village houses, where several households share one line and the lowest fixture in the lowest cellar takes whatever comes back up. Older houses commonly have stone or brick cellars, and porous masonry that has held contaminated water needs cleaning and then drying rather than a wipe down.

Severe storms here show what a loaded system looks like at street level. When the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred crossed on 19 August 2021, a court-system spokeswoman said a court building had flooded from the city sewer system, and the remnants of Ida closed several Worcester streets overnight the following month. Our guide to Worcester combined sewers and sewer backup goes through it in more detail.

FAQ

Sewer Backup Cleanup FAQs

Can I clean up a small sewage backup myself?

It is not advisable, even for a small one. Contaminated water needs protective equipment, containment so it is not tracked or blown into clean parts of the house, dedicated equipment, and removal of porous material rather than cleaning. A mop and a bucket spread residue and leave the water that has already soaked into masonry and framing. If you have already started, stop, close the room off and tell the crew exactly what you did and with what.

How do I know whether the blockage is mine or the city?

Ask the Department of Public Works which pipe the blockage is in; that is the question to put to them, and it decides who arranges the repair. General New England practice is that an owner looks after the pipe from the building out toward the main and the municipality looks after the main, but the boundary and the process vary by community, so get it from the DPW rather than from a general rule.

Will the smell go away?

It goes when the source goes, which means the contaminated porous material out of the building, the hard surfaces cleaned and treated, and then the structure dried. A smell that persists after cleanup almost always means something is still wet or something porous was left in place, often under a bottom plate or behind masonry. That is a readings question, and the meters usually find it quickly.

What is a backwater valve, and should I have one?

It is a valve fitted in the building drain designed to close if water tries to flow back toward the house. Whether one suits your building depends on how the drain is laid out, where the lowest fixture sits and how the line is vented, so it is a question for a licensed plumber. The sump pump failure and backwater valves page covers what they do and what fails.

I rent. What are my landlord obligations?

Report it in writing immediately and keep a copy. The State Sanitary Code at 105 CMR 410.500 requires owners to keep a building watertight and free of excess moisture, and for a leak it requires affected surfaces to be dried within 48 hours of notice or of the end of the event. Your city inspectional services or board of health enforces the code, can inspect on request and can issue orders to the owner.

How long does a backup cleanup take?

The removal and cleaning is usually the shorter part, and the drying that follows runs for days until wet materials match a dry reference reading taken elsewhere in the same building. We cannot give an arrival time, as crews go out as one becomes free, but the phone is answered at any hour.
